Stefan George: Thou (From German)

Thou
By Stefan George
Translated by A.Z. Foreman
Click here to hear me recite the German

Thou flaming column pure and slender
Thou light and tender as the dawn
Thou flowering shoot from seed of grandeur
Thou wellspring simple and withdrawn

Companion on my sunlit meadows
All round me in the evening haze
Light on my path through coming shadows
Thou cooling breeze Thou breath ablaze

Thou art my wish and all I think
I breathe of Thee in all my air
I savor Thee in every drink
I kiss Thy fragrance everywhere

Thou flowering shoot from seed of grandeur
Thou wellspring simple and withdrawn

Thou flaming column pure and slender
Thou light and tender as the dawn

The Original:

Du schlank und rein wie eine flamme
Du wie der morgen zart und licht
Du blhend reis vom edlen stamme
Du wie ein quell geheim und schlicht

Begleitest mich auf sonnigen matten
Umschauerst mich im abendrauch
Erleuchtest meinen weg im schatten
Du khler wind du heisser hauch

Du bist mein wunsch und mein gedanke
Ich atme dich mit jeder luft
Ich schlrfe dich mit jedem tranke
Ich ksse dich mit jedem duft

Du blhend reis vom edlen stamme
Du wie ein quell geheim und schlicht
Du schlank und rein wie eine flamme
Du wie der morgen zart und licht

The Great Sufi Poet of Herat, Jami

Despite being virtually unknown here in America, the outstanding 15th century Persian Sufi, Nuruddin Abdul Rahman Jami was a Sufi poet par excellence. I'm not saying that his excellency,  Maulana Rumi is a Prophet, but he sure does have a Book. "Nuruddin Abdul Rahman Jami (1414-1492) was a Persian poet, scholar, and Sufi mystic. Rumi and Confucius

"Despite the fact that Confucius and Rumi were born in different periods and places, both were born at a time of social upheaval and political turmoil. Consequently, both thinkers tried to provide the means for their people to overcome the times of difficulty, first by understanding, cultivating, and realizing their human potentialities, and then by transforming themselves, their families, and their societies. Interestingly, Rumi and Confucius share more in common than most people would think and their teachings are still meaningful and relevant to the modern world. The wisdom of Confucius and Rumi provides todays readers with spiritual resources to overcome the challenges of our time and to build bridges of understanding and dialogue among different cultures and civilizations. This paper examines the core ideas of these two great thinkers and provides anthropocosmic insights into their ideas on nature, family and music."
