The Great Sufi Poet of Herat, Jami

Despite being virtually unknown here in America, the outstanding 15th century Persian Sufi, Nuruddin Abdul Rahman Jami was a Sufi poet par excellence. Among the Persian speakers, Jami's following verses - offering glowing praises for Rumi and his magna obra, Masnavi Manavi or Rhyming Couplets of Profound Spiritual Meanings - are widely known and often recited:

Maulana Rumi's Masnavi Manavi
is the Quran in Persian language.
I'm not saying that his excellency,
Maulana Rumi is a Prophet,
but he sure does have a Book.

"Nuruddin Abdul Rahman Jami (1414-1492) was a Persian poet, scholar, and Sufi mystic. He wrote lyrical poems and odes, seven romantic or didactic Masnavi (rhyming couplets), such as `Yusuf u Zulaikha` and `Salaman and Absal`, and many other works. Over almost fifty years, Jami turned his hand to every genre of Persian poetry and penned numerous treatises on a wide range of topics in the humanities and religious sciences. Jami is considered one of the greatest Persian poets of all time and one of the last great Sufi poets. The author of about 87 books and countless letters, Jami wrote history, philosophy and theology, although he is best known in the West for his verse. Included in the larger work Haft Awrang (Seven Thrones), Jamis poem Yusuf and Zulaykha retells the story of Jacobs son Joseph and Potiphars wife. "

Beharistan or Abode of Sprin -by Jami

The renowned Persian thinker and poet 'Abd al-Rahman al-Jami (1414-92 CE) wrote his Flashes of Light (Lawa'ih) to explain "the intuitions and verities displayed on the pages of the hearts and minds of men of insight and divine knowledge." Each section of his work consists of a discussion in prose and a portion in verses. Jami provides one of the best, synthetic introductions to Sufi spirituality.

The task of my life is love
The reason of my life is love
The sum of my life is love
My mind has completely gone for love
My heart and soul are always protected by love.

I need to come back to my senses
so I can start my preaching about love.

Unless your chest gets that burning feeling
every time love is mentioned,
you can never truly explain the meaning of love.

May my Helper from High Above
bestow more knowledge upon me,
so I can continue my research studies on love.

I feel my chest is burning for love right now,
so here are my humble explanations
of the good old love:

Love is just a poor moth
in front of the Eternal Flame (God).
Those burning marks on the moth
are for the sake of the everlasting love.

A soul without love,
is just a lifeless dead corpse.
A soul blessed by love,
remains forever alive.

Seek the very essence of your life
in love.
Search your own inner treasures
in love.

Wherever it might be,
love is always the alchemy of all things.
Even worthless copper touched by love,
turns into solid gold.

Love is not meant
to get attached to this material world,
love means giving up on both worlds.
Love is not meant
to simply wish for eternal union with the Beloved,
love means getting burned and consumed
in the flames of self-annihilation first.

A lover is the one
who happily sings the song of self-annihilation
while letting go of his or her own self.
A lover is the one
who not only gives up the wealth of this world,
but also ignores the rewards of the hereafter.

A lover's lifelong quest
is finding the direction of the Friend (God)
because anything and anyone but the Friend,
is simply a mirage.

A lover even gives up
on his or her closest loved ones,
for the sake of eternal mystical union
with the Friend.

A lover even abandons
the joyous company of lifelong friends,
in order to follow as the Friend commands.

At any given moment,
a lover stands in total awe of love.
And in every breath taken,
a lover cherishes the blessings of love.
Jami.

Gwenallt Jones: Wales (From Welsh)

Wales By Gwenallt Jones Translated by A.Z. Foreman Why give us all this misery? The wrack Of pain on flesh and blood like leaden weight, Your language on our shoulders like a sack, And your traditions fetters round our feet? The canker rots your colors everywhere. Your soul is scabbed with boils. Your song a scream. In your own land you are but a nightmare And your survival but a witch's dream. Still, we can't leave you in the filth to stand A generation's laughing-stock and jest. Your former freedom is our sword in hand, Your dignity a buckler at our breast. We'll grip our spears and spur our steeds: go brave Lest we should shame our fathers in their grave.   The Original: Cymru Gwenallt Jones Paham y rhoddaist inni'r tristwch hwn, A'r boen fel pwysau plwm ar gnawd a gwaed?
